801 Mandala Star, with Sherri DriverLearn the techniques that Sherri used for drafting and sewing her quilt, Native Weavings: Feathered Star, featured on the cover of the AQS book, New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Feathered Star. You'll make an 18" block showcasing a feathered or plain star within a circle using Sherri’s techniques for foundation-pieced curves and bias strip appliqué. Students should be familiar with foundation piecing (paper piecing) and sewing set-in seams.

Supplies: freezer paper - 18" square; pencil; fine-point permanent marker, such as Sharpie; removable tape (or masking tape or painters tape); paper scissors; fabric scissors; basic sewing supplies - thread, ripper, pins, extra needles, etc.; rotary cutting equipment - mat, ruler, cutter. Fabrics for class: 1/4 yd dark or medium print for star points (If you want to fussy cut these, be sure you can get 8 repeats.); dark scraps (or 1/8 yd) for feathers (optional); 1/3 yd light, subtly textured print, or hand-dyed fabric for curved strips*; 1/3 yd of another fabric to encircle the star and curved sections*; 1 fat quarter of a compatible fabric that contrasts with the previous fabric; * These fabrics will be cut on the bias, so choose accordingly. Fabric and supplies you'll need later to finish your quilt: 1/2 yd of another compatible fabric for the large outer corners. Supplies to hand or machine appliqué.

Learn a sampling of designs and techniques and improve your overall free-motion skills. Backgrounds such as Headbands, Bouncing Bananas©, "Diane-Shiko"© , Ripple Stipple, Folding Towels, and other designs are included. Thread choices and colors discussed to make your quilting look the best it can be. Learn to be "boss" of your sewing machine! Some free motion experience necessary.

Supplies: We will create a reference library of quilting. Layer and pin baste two sandwiches 20" square, backing a bit larger, batt same size as top square. Use medium to light value non-busy great cotton fabric, solids or "almost solid." Thread should match or be in the same or lighter value range as the top fabric. Choose from YLI #100 Silk, #60 Mettler 2-ply cotton; #50 Aurifil cotton, Superior MasterPiece cotton, #50 YLI silk; #50 DMC cotton, Kinkame #50 silk, YLI Soft Touch #60 cotton. Bring several shades. Discover ways to combine the curvy-blocks into a motion-filled wall hanging that is fast to assemble and in three optional designs: broken circles, randomly curved squares, or meandering, dancing curves. If you use basic bold brights in nearly-solid fabrics, quilt is exceptional. By the end of the day, you may have your Curvaceous Squares completely sewn together and ready to quilt.

Every quilt will look different based on wavy border technique! Students choose from 10 different leaf patterns to further personalize their quilt. Instruction in a new and innovative use of Pellon Décor Bond for machine appliqué will be covered. Pattern fee $6.

Supplies: Basic: rotary cutter with new blade and mat; Omnigrid ruler (6"x 24" is best, 6"x12" will work); seam ripper - nice and sharp; very important! Pins - flat pins work best; new Universal machine needles 80/12; large-eyed hand sewing needle - should accommodate 30 wt. thread; scissors - a secondary pair with a sharp point of appliqué side-cutting scissors will be helpful; pencil. Fabric: (3) 10"x10" squares of tonal prints - different colors/different hues; 1/2 yd center background - batiks/hand dyes work well; 1/2 yd solid black; 1 yd Pellon Décor Bond - important! 1/2 yd Pellon Wonder Under - medium strength fuse; scraps of at least 20 different tonal and multicolored fabric for leaves - must have at least one brown piece for stems and several pieces at least 10"x10" for larger leaves. Class instruction includes her basic curves method, incorporating the openings, layering the quilt sandwich, making and inserting latticework in the openings and finishing techniques. Supplies: Fabrics - 100% cotton fabrics. Batiks and multi-colored hand-dyed fabrics. Bring a variety of favorite fabrics and include colors in at least three values (light, medium and dark with a noticeable color contrast from a distance of approx. 10 ft) Choose colors that are vivid and bright, as well as some that are pastel (pale), shades (dark) tones (grayed) and the deepest dark colors. 1/2 or 1/4 yds, scraps or fat quarters will do. Stabilizer - 2 yds of Pellon regular lightweight or mid-weight stabilizer (not iron-on or tear-away); Freezer paper - 1 yd; Dritz Stitch Witchery on a roll (5/8”); Needles (for sewing machine) regular 80/12 for piecing, 90/12 topstitch for latticework.; Hand sewing needle; Batting - A piece approx 2'x 2'; Scissors- paper and fabric; Flex curve (if you have one); Spray bottle for water; Straight pins (sharp!); Fabric marking pencil; Threads - bring a variety...for matching or blending the fabrics; Wax paper (sheet approx. 1/2 yd); Scotch tape, eraser, pencils, ruler, notebook. The basket is needlewoven and filled with a wide variety of flowers using embroidery and ribbon work techniques. This can be the start of a mini quilt or a small wall hanging. Kit fee $12.

Kit includes: Watercolour cotton (3) in basket shades, lavender/yellow and blue/pink; Silk ribbon 7mm: 1 yd each of white and yellow; Silk ribbon 4 mm: 1 yd each of green, yellow, apricot, deep blue, pink and blue variegated; Organdy ribbon 7mm: 1 yd of red; Chenille or 4 mm ribbon variegated in red/yellow/green; 2 toothpicks; 6" square tissue paper; 6" square of tracing vilene.

This workshop is for those who are ready to advance their hand appliqué skills beyond the basic patterns to achieve deceivingly complex layered appliqué. We will break down the steps to creating beautiful intricate appliqué. Tips and techniques will be shared to help take the mystery out of this elegant form of appliqué. This class is not for beginners.

Supplies: Fabrics: 16" square of fabric for background; A small variety of approximately 8" square scraps of fabrics in a variety of values (lt., med. & dark) for the following - Roses (these can be values of red or any other color you desire), Greens for foliage (leaves), Yellow for rose centers, Black (tone-on-tone or batik), Pale blue (tone-on-tone or batik), Pale yellow (tone-on-tone or batik), White, Colors for grapes such as purple or blue. Supplies: Appliqué Needles (I prefer #11 sharps); A good pair of small sharp 3-1/2"-4" embroidery scissors for fabric; White Roxanne's, Pat Campbell, or General's marking pencil (or your preference); Pencil sharpener for marking pencil; A regular No. 2 pencil; 3/4" Clover appliqué pins or other preferable small (1/2"-3/4") pins (Clover pins are preferable); Freezer paper (Reynolds or C. Jenkins work best); 16" square clear upholstery vinyl 12mm wt.; Black Sharpie fine point marker (not a Micron pen) If working with a dark background fabric bring a yellow fine point Sharpie, or a white Pentel paint pen; Appliqué thread to match fabrics (I use DMC 50wt. 2 ply and/or Mettler 60 wt.) 6" square of fine 220 grit sandpaper. Optional: Small sharp (to the point) scissors for cutting freezer paper if you don't want to use the embroidery scissors to cut the freezer paper; Sandpaper, or a quilter's sandpaper board (helpful, but optional); Fray Check; Thimble.

She will share how she designs quilts, studying how she uses color and fabric to create her folk art look. She encourages students to adjust the pattern to make their own folk art design. And she really hopes that students bring fabric they love. Her quilt designs look wonderful in batiks, bright fabric, soft pastels and many other combinations. She will review her hand appliqué technique and demonstrate. She will also open the door to a new technique by adding sparkle to the quilts with beads! Her beading techniques are very easy and everyone will be itching to start a new collection after class. After all, beads don't take up much room! Demo on beading is done at the end of the class time. Katie's Tulips pattern is included for each student.

Follow a charming, 16" pillow top or wall quilt [top] project to learn the preparation for appliqué dogtooth borders by hand or machine. A kit is used to make the preparation for the class easy and the class time more efficient. Backing, binding and batting are not included in the kit. A PowerPoint presentation opens the class presenting the step-by-step process of using Darlene's DCC DOGTOOTH TOOL, followed by "hands on" practice. Machine workers can begin the process by hand in class and complete the work by machine easily. Kit fee $8.

Kit includes: Pattern and all fabrics, some pins [Clover fine silk] and a needle [Richard Hemming & Sons milliners #11].

Supplies: Thimble and misc. hand sewing tools. Small, sharp, straight 4" embroidery scissors for fabrics and threads, VERITHIN silver art pencil -or- white chalk pencil. Mettler 60/2 cotton threads with the green printing are available for use during the class. Fabrics will vary but normally color #700 is suitable. Free-motion quilting can be a little scary, but we'll take the fear out of it with some easy starting points. You'll be stippling and creating your own free-motion designs in no time. We'll learn to draw with our sewing machine - stippling, stars, loops, pattern-fill, and writing your name!

Supplies: Paper - 12-20 sheets - 8-1/2" x 11" plain unlined paper or newsprint (printer paper works just fine); Pencil; General sewing supplies, scissors, needles etc.; Threads: bobbin thread or lingerie thread (wt 80-120), colored threads 50 and 40 wt cotton. Optional: other threads you'd like to try (rayon, poly, monofilament); Muslin "sandwiches" - 8 to 12 of them, at least 12-18 inches square (two pieces of muslin with batting in the middle (If you are a speedy sewer, you may want to bring more sandwiches); Some dull sewing machine needles and some new quilting needles for the machine - size 75 and 90; Machine quilting gloves (If you have never used gloves before, I recommend Machingers).
