Educational Programs

Education has been a priority with NQA since the beginning in 1970. Today NQA still strives to impart knowledge associated with quilt making, and establishes and encourages educational, professional, and ethical standards. The Education Program is filled with offerings for the quilt world.

The following items are available:

  • Teaching Basic Quilt Making handbook is available in two formats; loose-leaf notebook and compact disc (Macintosh and Windows compatible). $15 each plus shipping.
  • A list of Certified Teachers appears on this website, as well as a list of Certified Judges.
  • A two-day course, "Introduction to Quilt Judging", is held at the annual NQA quilt show. The course concentrates on the preparation and qualifications of quilt judges, the judging setup, and the substance of quilt evaluation in the judging process itself.

In addition, The National Quilting Association has developed two programs to help insure basic standards for the teaching and judging of quilts and quilt making. In the Teachers' Certification program, teachers must demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental skills and must be able to share that knowledge with students. In the Judges' Certification program, judges must demonstrate basic knowledge of quilt making and must have the ability to evaluate work in terms of color, design, and workmanship.
