Nola King, age 91, is the oldest member of the Bloomington Quilters Guild and is the only founding member still active in the guild. When Nola was 14 years old, her mother taught her to quilt, using patterns from farm newspapers. She made two quilts that year, her first one a "flower garden". Nola enjoys piecing, appliqué, and whole-cloth quilting, and has done all three. She has pieced more than 50 quilts, mostly by hand, only recently using the machine for piecing.
But Nola is a living legend in the Bloomington community for her exquisite and prolific hand-quilting. She has quilted more than 500 quilts -- all by hand. Nola has won numerous "Grand Champion" awards at county and state fairs. She won Grand Champion at the Indiana State Fair in 2005, at age 90! She has quilted a dozen "donation quilts" for the Bloomington Quilters Guild. She currently has four quilts in progress, all in frames.
Nola was featured, along with a sampling of her quilts, at the triennial Bloomington Quilters Guild Show last November. Visitors were awed by her work and charmed by Nola, "Our Treasure", who graciously met visitors and answered questions for hours.
NQA and its Chapters present these quilts to be seen and enjoyed on our website - but not copied by any means. These quilts remain the artistic property of the makers. Standard copyright rules apply.
