What's "the Buzz..."?
I am happy to announce that the NQA Facebook Page has been rebuilt and is now up and working. Even if you "liked" us in the past, please go back to FB and like us again at NQA - National Quilting Association. My goal is to have at least 300 "friends" by the time the 2012 Show rolls around in June!
Please note that we are combining the Chapter Newsletter and the Member Newsletter in this issue of the Buzz. With this step members everywhere will have the opportunity to discover shows and exhibits announced by Chapters from all over the country.

From the President - Judy Taylor
Happy Valentine’s Day to you all! It is hard to believe we’re already heading into February. Wasn’t Christmas just last week?
February marks the beginning of our annual membership recruitment and renewal drive. These are tough economic times and we are all faced with many important choices as to where we spend our dollars. Whether it is for an organizational membership, magazine subscriptions, or quilt classes we are all taking a harder look at cost versus benefit. So we understand that this applies to your membership in NQA as well. When you get your renewal card in the mail and evaluate to renew or not to renew, please take a moment and consider the following benefits of NQA membership:
Grant Program - Funded by individual donations and the annual Little Quilt Auction, this program encourages organizations, institutions, and individuals to apply for a grant enabling them to pursue and further the art of quiltmaking through education, research, craftsmanship, and documentation.
Judge Certification - Established in 1979, this program was created to assure that those seeking to judge quilts are equipped with the knowledge and skills to do so objectively.
Teacher Certification - This program was created to certify teachers of basic quiltmaking and to encourage candidates to examine and improve their techniques.
Master Quilt Program - Recognizing quilts that exhibit superlative craftsmanship and design is the goal of this program. It also offers post-certification to judges, qualifying them to evaluate nominated Master Quilts.
National Quilting Day - Sponsored by NQA since 1992, the third Saturday in March is set aside as a time to celebrate quilts and focuses on quilters' contributions to their communities.
Web Site - www.nqaquilts.org - The website provides current information about NQA programs, membership, quilters, Chapters, the annual quilt show, and industry-related information for members and the public.
Quilting Quarterly — now published six issues per year, including the Special Show Issue in late summer.
Reduced fees – Members receive reduced fees for classes and quilt entries in the Annual Show for NQA individual members. In addition, members can purchase 3-day passes to the Quilt show for $15, compared to the $10 per day admission.
To be a part of an outstanding organization –NQA members are integral to preserving the heritage of antique and traditional quilts, recognizing the craftsmanship and design of contemporary quilts and encouraging exploration into the future of the quilting arts.
As President of NQA, I hope you renew your membership and help us share and celebrate the heritage and legacy of quilt makers and the quilting arts that began more than 42 years ago. We are NQA!
Happy quilting,
Judy Taylor, President

MAKE A LITTLE QUILT FOR THE 25TH LQA GALA EVENT - to benefit the NQA Grant Program
We cordially invite you to be an important part of this year’s exciting 25th Annual Celebration Gala evening by donating one of your creations. Miniatures, doll quilts, and small wall quilts make excellent donations. Please limit the size to no more than 28" on any side. All of these quilts will be available for viewing on the show floor prior to the live auction. A Viewer’s Choice ribbon will be awarded to both the maker and to the winning bidder for the chosen quilt.
At the discretion of the committee and directed by the number of entries, a selection of these
quilts will be offered at Silent Auction each day of the show. Please sign or permanently label the back of your donation quilt, and include the LQA Entry Form found on page 27 of the show brochure. This information will be used in the LQA brochure and for commentary during the live auction. Donations must be received by Saturday, May 19, 2012 to be included in the brochure. Late donations will be held for the next auction.
A receipt for the monies raised will be provided at the conclusion of the auction for your personal records. For any questions concerning the LQA, please contact the NQA office at nqaquilts@

From the Members Services Chair: Lois Arnold
February is a great month! Both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington were born in February (I was too!) and we celebrate Valentines Day in February. If you need a gift for a special quilter for Valentines Day, why not give her the gift of an NQA membership? It’s a great way to show you care all year long!
Be sure to go to the Member Spotlight area and see the quilt art of Sashiko in the quilts that Mary DeRay has made. They are truly beautiful! In March, Diane Pitchford will be featured. If you would like to be featured or know of a member who you would like to recommend to be featured, please contact me through the web site or just e-mail me at memberservices@nqaquilts.org.
Check your membership date of renewal on your latest QQ to make sure you don’t miss out on anything! You can renew online now or send in your reminder card when it arrives.

IT’S UP AND READY!
NQA now has a webpage for the exclusive display of Raffle or Opportunity Quilts created by NQA Chapters. Whether you call your one-of-a-kind creation a Raffle Quilt or an Opportunity Quilt, each NQA chapter in good standing can upload a good resolution digital photo of their completed quilt to be viewed by all visitors to the NQA website.
In addition to the photo, we welcome a brief paragraph or two about the quilt and its creation. This information will be used as a caption and will accompany the photo of the quilt on the webpage. Information can include, but is not limited to:
- Name and location of the chapter
- Number of individuals involved in the creation of the quilt
- Charitable beneficiaries, if any, of the monies raised by the sale of raffle tickets
- Chapter website address and /or a contact to purchase raffle tickets
- Date of the drawing of the winner of the quilt
Each quilt will remain displayed on the NQA website until the end of the month after the drawing of the winner. To obtain more information and the address to upload your chapter’s Raffle Quilt, go to http://www.nqaquilts.org/ and click on the Raffle/Opportunity Quilt tab.
Give it a try—it’s your chapter’s exclusive opportunity to share the talent of your membership—and you may sell more tickets too!
