What's "the Buzz..."?
One of my favorite events at the NQA Annual Show is the Little Quilt Auction. I try to donate a quilt each year but the real fun is in bidding for a gem created by someone else. How often in life do we get a chance to do good for others while spoiling ourselves?
This year I had the good luck to bring home the quilt pictured here: Chrysanthemum - Autumn by Kathie Kerler of Oregon. It is now hanging on my wall alongside LQA "wins" from the last five years.

See below for more information about the NQA Grant Program from our Grants Program Chair, Cindy Casciato.

From the President - Judy Taylor
Hello NQA members - I hope you are enjoying your summer as much as I am. With the stifling heat, it has been a tremendous relief to actually spend some time in the coolness of my longarm studio and quilt! There’s nothing like having it be 113 degrees outside to make you appreciate the importance of air-conditioning.
August 31st marks the end of summer, kids heading back to school and the start of the quilt show season. For me, it also marks the end of my term as President of NQA. It has been my privilege and honor to serve in this capacity and I wish President Elect, Ruth Pollow, the very best of luck as she assumes her role as President. There are challenges ahead for the new Board, yet many exciting opportunities. I ask that you support their efforts whenever and wherever you can.
My thanks to all of you for supporting me, your Board, your Quilt Show, and this wonderful organization.
Happy quilting to you all and remember, We Are NQA!

From Barbara Polston, Editor, The Quilting Quarterly
Headed Your Way!
If you haven’t received your Show Special Edition yet, it’s on the way! We know that you’re excited to see the winning quilts and are pleased that we were able to shave over a week off our production schedule to get this issue to you just as quickly as humanly possible. We hope you enjoy it and its new protective packaging!
I like to think that each Show Special Edition begins a new cycle of magazines. What can you expect from The Quilting Quarterly? We’re planning several theme issues. Because I would like for those to be lovely surprises, that’s all I’ll reveal! We will continue to bring you the latest in NQA news as well as patterns, techniques, and other stories of interest to the quilter.
And, don’t forget, our contests! The “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” contest is still open. Share what quilt-related things you’re up to this summer! Send a photo of you, doing something quilty, while on summer vacation....OK...”stay-cations” count too! Tell me what you’re doing in the photo and where it was taken. Everyone submitting a photo will be entered into a small prize drawing. Your photo submissions are due on Labor Day...Monday, September 3...the unofficial end of summer. Send your jpeg photos and explanation via e-mail to editor@nqaquilts.org.

From President-Elect - Ruth Pollow
At a recent guild meeting, we asked members to bring in quilting tips and ideas using non-quilting tools. The funniest one was a woman who walked up with a large tote bag. She reached in and flamboyantly extracted a TOILET BRUSH!!! Audience eyes opened wide in amazement until she told us that she used a toilet brush to clean up the fabric scraps and threads off the carpet in her sewing room rather than always dragging out the heavy vacuum cleaner. She also was very adamant that this toilet brush had never been used for anything other than cleaning her carpet!
What unusual tools do you use in your sewing room or when making quilts? Share them with us on NQA Facebook.

NQA Chapter Compassion:
In May 2012, members of the Log Cabin Quilters Guild of Elkins, WV brought 11 colorful quilts to the Elkins Dialysis Center. This is the 11th year they have performed this service project, so 11 quilts were very appropriate even though they donate up to 15 quilts a year to the Center. The dialysis treatment room is kept cool for bacterial control so the patients really appreciate the warmth of the quilts. Staff members give out the quilts as needed. On one occasion, a long time patient noticed that the newer patients were being offered quilts. He asked if he could also have one despite already having two regular blankets of his own. He told the staff he wanted to have someone care about him too. It is not simply about keeping warm, it’s about the love and care that are sewn into each unique and carefully pieced quilt. Some of the quilters might even weave a few prayers into their quilts as they stitch them up.
When one dialysis patient relocated to Florida, he took his quilt along with him. The staff and patients at his new dialysis center were astonished that people he had never met made him such a lovely quilt.
The Log Cabin Quilter’s Guild was organized in 1986 and has over 50 members. In addition to the Dialysis Center, they donate to several other local and national organizations. It seems the number of quilts donated increases every year and this year they hope to donate up to 50 quilts.
Our thanks to Linda Rudy for sharing this example of compassion by our NQA Chapter, The Log Cabin Quilters of Elkins, WV
If your chapter has a story of compassion and/or outreach that you would like to share in THE BUZZ, email Sue Castelli at nqachapterc@nqaquilts.org.
