What's "the Buzz..."?
Hi, I am Marilyn Gore and truly excited to be your new communications chair! I have been a long time member of NQA, but have been in “the shadows.” With retirement, I have more and more time to devote to my favorite activity – quilting. I am taking more classes, have volunteered to serve as 2013 President of my local guild, making more charity quilts for my quilting ministry and spending more time in my quilting room. But, I still had just enough time to devote to NQA and I hope that I will completely meet the needs of our members in the area of communication.
Thanks to Kathy Lichtendahl for her service to the board in her time as communication chair.
I would also like to take this time to wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
Happy Holidays!

From the President - Ruth Pollow
It’s only a few weeks until the winter holidays are upon us and I hope that all your gift projects are coming along nicely. As you may have noticed on your recent visits to the NQA website, we are partnering with e-Quilters to make and send bed size quilts to areas that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The need will continue to exist for many months as residents and families try to get their lives back to some sense of normalcy. Even after homes are rebuilt, the quilts these people receive will continue to remind them that there are people around the country who have reached out to them and said “we care.”
Whether you are part of a Guild that is sending multiple quilts or an individual who is sending just one quilt, what you are doing to help matters. Check out the suggestions in the notice on the front page of our website http://www.nqaquilts.org/. THANK YOU to everyone who can join the NQA family in helping with this important effort.
GIFT WITH MEMBERSHIP
NQA is partnering with YLI Thread Company to offer all our renewing and new members a special spool of YLI thread with your membership. Since some of you will start your renewal for 2013 in December, we will start sending this FREE GIFT with every renewal and new membership we receive starting December 1. If you’ve never tried YLI threads before, I think you will find this to be a high quality thread to use on your sewing and quilting projects.

From the NQD Coordinator - Freda Jones
National Quilting Day is celebrated all through the year. I was able to share the National Quilting Day 2012 Pattern with a veteran by making the quilt in red, white and blue. Using the “Pointing the Way” pattern, my quilt was given to a World War II veteran being honored recently. Jobe D. Marshall served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and subsequently retired from the U.S. Air force in 1967. I was to escort him to Washington, DC on the Ocala Honor Flight. Honor Flight is a community based project to take World War II veterans to see the World War II memorial, completed in 2004.
Did you make a 2012 National Quilting Day quilt, designed by Martha Ethridge and available on the website now? If you did, we would like to have a photograph and description of your project to include in a presentation on National Quilting Day at the 2013 National Quilting Association Quilt Show in June at the Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Send your photographs and descriptions to me, Freda Jones, at nqdcoordinator@nqaquilts.org. Be sure to include your name, e-mail address, and telephone number in case I have questions.
The 2013 National Quilting Day Pattern coordinates with the theme of the 44th Annual NQA Show, which is “CELEBRATE AMERICA!” National Quilting Day will be celebrated on March 16, 2013. The pattern for the 2013 quilt was designed by Kathy Lichtendahl and will be published in the next issue of The Quilting Quarterly and available free on the NQA web site in January.

From the Chapter Services Chair - Sue Castelli
THANKS TO ALL………..
As the year comes to a close, our sincere thanks to all NQA chapters featured on the 2012 Chapter Showcase. We appreciate your sharing your chapter’s history, your talents and your extensive contributions & outreach to others, both near and far. Our website traffic throughout the year reflected a worldwide audience of like-minded quilters. NQA chapters make this webpage a reality and we look forward to sharing the talent and good works of our chapters in the year ahead.
LOOKING AHEAD………
The Shenandoah Valley Quilter’s Guild from Harrisonburg, Virginia is featured on the Chapter Showcase webpage in December. Come on over, read about this chapter’s history and see some of their “eye candy”. www.nqaquilts.org.
IN SYMPATHY………
Our heartfelt sympathy to Thelma Barr and her family in the loss of her husband, Ed. Thelma is one of the original members of the NQA and is a recipient of the Master Quilt award. Mr. Barr is credited not only for being Vice President of a newly formed NQA, he is also responsible for taking photos of EVERY quilt at the annual NQA shows from 1970 to 2003. In addition to the slides of all the quilts, he maintained a card catalog of each quilt containing all pertinent information about the quilt, its creator, and the show in which the quilt was displayed. Earlier this year, the Barr Family passed this wealth of archival records to the NQA for safekeeping—and we thank them for their unselfish contribution to the NQA.

IN CLOSING……
May all who have read these messages during the past year have a wonderful holiday filled with love & shared with family and friends. It’s individuals like you who have made the NQA an incredibly unique organization of talented, giving members. See you in the New Year! Sue Castelli, NQA Chapter Services |

In Remembrance
At this time of year we remember beloved quilters who are no longer with us such as NQA Certified Teacher Jennifer McCann who passed away this past summer. Jennifer was a passionate quilter and teacher who spread love of quilting and love of life to those around her. NQA honors all past quilters who, like Jennifer, brought beauty into our world.
