"...and sew on"

by Vivian Benton

Vivian BentonSome of you won't receive this magazine until January - the new year - so Happy New Year! I hope you've all set realistic goals for yourselves and "to do more quilting" is at the top of the list. I also hope volunteering to help NQA is somewhere on your list, but you'll make it more of a priority this new year. As with all nonprofit volunteer organizations, your help is needed. Please see page 5 for information on how you can help serve NQA. If you can't serve as an officer, just volunteer to work on a committee; the show always needs volunteers.

As we've done the last few years, we've included the show booklet inside this issue. This is a very convenient way for you to receive all the information you need about the show and the magazine, too! It's stitched separately so you can pull it out and not tear up your magazine. Each year, the show offers more and more. The quilt entries have been absolutely amazing, and the faculty offers something for everybody. I plan to take two classes this year. I waited too late last year and could not take the classes I wanted so sign up early before your favorite classes are filled. In addition to the show booklet, this web site is full of all kinds of information and is always kept current. As the year progresses more and more information is added to the web site so make sure you bookmark it as one of your favorites.

In this issue, Scott Murkin shares with us his technique for what he calls "framed diamonds." Scott started out making these as personalized labels but quickly realized how attractive there were as quilt blocks. You'll think so, too. If you were under the impression that everything on the web is free, think again! Gloria Hansen (page 18) clears up any misconceptions you might have about copying images, text or HTML and scripts. Gloria has done a thorough job, so please read it.

If you like humor, you'll love reading the article about Don Linn by Sylvia Landman. Don calls himself "Mr. Quilt," and does his lectures in a top hat, bow tie, tails and gloves, along with a gold-tipped cane.

Scattered throughout the magazine are more quilts from the 37th annual show. Be sure to read the inside front and inside back cover, where Mary Buvia and Patricia Pepe talk about how they made their winning quilts.

So get a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy.
